Steeton Walking for Health Group

On July 25th 'Steeton Walking for Health' was 2 years old. To celebrate the ocasion the arranged walk was postponed and 15 of us walked from Trawden to Wycoller. As it was somewhat damp we opted not to walk up to the panoptican but spent some time in a very interesting museum in the old barn round the ruined hall. After walking back to Wycoller we enjoyed lunch at a favourite 'eating place', The Old Rock Cafe.

How it all began...

The original idea came from our local chemist Martin Cant who wanted to keep the population of Steeton and Eastburn as healthy as possible. He put the matter to the Parish Council, but due to pressure of work he was unable to continue with the project himself. At one Neighbourhood Forum meeting early in 2008 an interested resident, Barry Wilson, said he was quite willing to organise walks. After some local advertising, a meeting was arranged at the Methodist Chapel and the Steeton Walking for Health group have been walking since then.

We are a friendly group of people of all ages, all with different outlooks on life and all with a great sense of humour. Originally we had some 23 people interested, but generally between 6 to 10 walk each week. Not all members are from Steeton and Eastburn, which is great.

We tend to organise our walks 4 or 5 weeks in advance (see details of next meeting above) and programmes of the walks are displayed at Steeton Pharmacy, Elmsley Street Newagents and a notice goes in the parish magazine. We will also list the walks here when the weather improves and we finalise the next programme.

We are alway looking for new members to join us on our walks. We usually walk between 5 and 6 miles but have members who are willing to lead short walks to explore the local villages, say 1 or 2 miles.

We meet each Monday at the car park at Steeton Methodist Church at 9:30am. From there either we use local transport to a decided locality and walk back to Steeton, or car share if the walk is rather more distant. We are all very flexible and if shorter walks are to be arranged, these could start later or possibly in the afternoon.
